My sustained investigation centers around the power of play. Key questions that have guided my artwork include: How can I capture the importance of carefree play for people of all ages? How are memories and nostalgia linked to play, and what triggers these emotions? Over time, I realized that what represents “play” to me may look different to someone else, especially those at different stages of life. My discovery motivated me to spend extra time looking at others’ stories from all different perspectives. I learned how age can affect one's imagination and readiness to participate in childish activities, which then informed my art practice and furthered my exploration of the power of play. Using clay alongside oil paint refined my ceramic practice and highlighted aspects of my storytelling. I sometimes call my clay elements “Legos,” a beloved childhood toy of mine that also means “play well” in Danish, perfectly encapsulating my theme. My goal was to create a portfolio that evokes nostalgia but also, and possibly more importantly, motivates viewers to continue indulging in what “play” looks like to them. A piece that helped influence and further my investigation is titled “Going for a Ride!”. It shows my grandparents posing on a bike in Hawaii, a trip they took after my grandma finished her breast cancer treatment. This painting was the first to showcase older subjects within my portfolio. It made me realize I wanted to continue exploring the relationship between age and the themes I was already developing. Additionally, I was challenged with this piece as a I struggled to develop a ceramic element that would make sense for this painting. I had many trial-and-error experiences before I was happy with the result. By embracing the joys and excitement of play, I aim to focus on the importance imagination and childishness.
